The BRIO Awards began in 1989 and continues to target those individual
artists living in the Bronx. Additional promotion of arts in the Bronx
continues with sustained support of its artists, including such former
BRIO winners as Latin jazz musician Ray Vega (“Boperation”),
choreographer Merián Soto (Merián Soto Dance and Performance),
and choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (Urban Bush Women).
The Bronx remains the only borough in New York City to have its own
ongoing fellowship awards for artists.

On June 1, 2005, the Bronx Council on the Arts hosted the first-ever
Bronx Artist Festival to honor those individual artists who have been
acknowledged over the years by the organization’s Bronx Recognizes
It’s Own (BRIO) Awards. BX1: Bronx Artist Festival 2005 took
place in a diverse array of locations over a four-day period, and
culminated in a special awards ceremony honoring former and current
BRIO winners who have moved on to noteworthy careers. Confirmed participants
included filmmaker Tony Vitale, first noted for his independent film
Kiss Me, Guido.
BX1 will continue as a biennial tradition and target different neighborhoods
in the Bronx in an effort to highlight the important of the arts throughout
the borough.
